What is PHOTOGRAPHY?
Before you start learning it, you have to have a clear idea of what it is in the first place. Having a clear definition will help you learn it so much faster and easier.
Photography is an art that expresses feelings and emotions and tells a story at the same time. It is not just about taking a pricy camera and capturing random pictures with it.
It needs intention, emotion, and story. That’s why the shooter must have a good eye for those. That way, he can identify more interesting subjects to shoot photos.
Also, skills play a very crucial role, as well. You can’t just be a good photographer and develop all the skills overnight. It takes hard work and practice.
Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that there is a lot of demand for a good photographer. People need photos in so many places in their life. And who can they use better than a professional photographer?
That means you can make money and make a living doing this job as well.
Building the foundation for exploring photography
Photography is not an easy skill to master in a short time. Also, you need to develop a good foundation before you go for anything fancy.
Foundations are going to be the things that you’ll use throughout the rest of your time. So, you must develop a solid foundation beforehand.
The first thing you’ll need is a good camera. You don’t have to spend a lot of money and get the fanciest camera. Going for the mid-range priced cameras will work just fine.
After getting yourself a camera, you should invest in a lens. That is crucial for getting the best shots with your camera.
Now, your preferred style determines what lens is best for you. So, make sure to take some time and pick the right one.
After getting those in place, you can start to practice. I highly recommend you to do a full course. That way, you can build a strong foundation in the art of photography
There are hundreds of courses you can find online. Enroll in one that has a good review. That will be all the content you need to grow and practice. You can also join local classes if you want.
Do You Want to start in photography? Here are some of our tips:
Assuming that you have everything in place, there are some tips that you can use. They will help you make fast progress. Let’s go over some of the tips for you down below.
Find an Inspiration
Getting an inspiration will skyrocket your progress. As photography is pretty hard, you’ll feel the urge to quit. But having an inspiration will help you push through it and make progress. You can also learn from the best as it will help you so much with your techniques.
Compose with Care
You should not take pictures of every single thing that gets in your way. Keep it simple, and look for something that sparks interest in you. That is a surefire way to get great shots. Be sure to make some tilting adjustments to the right as well. That small thing can make your photos look more appealing.
Use Manual Focus
A lot of the modern cameras feature AF. But it’s way better and efficient to use the manual focus. You’ll have more control over the image that way. And then it’s far better than an automatic focus for getting the most precise and detailed shots.
Learn to Use Lights
You must know that lighting is the most crucial thing that impacts your photos. You must understand it and learn to use it as well. Good lighting will make your photos bright and radiant.
Get a Mentor
There is no shame in seeking help from someone who is better than you. You should get a mentor as he will help you achieve your goals a thousand times faster. Also, it’s a great idea to learn from the best, and you should take advantage of that.
Some of the Challenges that I Had to Face
My journey to being a photographer was not easy at all. There are a few big obstacles in my way.
Get a College Degree
The no.1 thing I was struggling to manage was my college degree. You can guess that it’s not easy to complete a college degree. One semester prepares you for the next one, and so on. You can’t just jump to the final semester right away.
Photography is just like that, as it shares the same values as well. As I obtained my college degree, I felt like I had a better grasp of things. I did it to get a high paying job like most people. But now that I conquered it, it felt so good to complete such a long time commitment.
Fixing up my house
At one point, my wife and I finally bought our dream house. But it was a challenge for both of us to make it a “Home.” We had to make so many arrangements to make it a more peaceful place for us to be at.
But every time we did something, a new thing appeared that we needed to work on. Photography is just like that, as well. You’ll learn a lot every single day. But then you’ll start to realize that there are so many more things that you need to learn on the way.
Try all kinds of photography
Most people make a mistake of sticking to just one single type of photography. It limits them from using their full creativity.
You should not fall for this trap at any cost. Bringing variety will only help you become a better and versatile photographer. And if you are thinking about making it a way of living, you must consider and try out all kinds of photography.
That’s going to allow you to take a look at what is possible. So, make sure that you step out of the box and explore a bit more. That might help you to achieve things that you never thought you could achieve in a lifetime.
Let’s discuss some of the examples of photographs you can take.
This is one of the most common photographs you see out there. And that makes it a great type of photography for you to try.
The main thing you need to focus on is what the subject is feeling. You need to emphasize that as much as you can in your pictures. Ask the subjects how they would like the photograph to be portrayed.
This crucial step will help you identify how you’re going to try to capture the shot in the first place. Do they want to look at the camera? Or do they choose to prime their directive elsewhere that is up to them. Knowing that beforehand will help you snap the best pictures.
This type of photography is something that you see almost everywhere. Landscape photos showcase the beauties of nature or even the beauty of a man-made sculpture.
You have to try and take landscape photographs at some point. It is just a great way to showcase your ability to capture nature. And if you are a nature lover like me, you are going to love this even more.
Just think as a spectator, what you’d like to see? Once you got the answer to that, try to emphasize it as much as you can in your pictures. That will give you the most unique shots that people are going to love.
Animal photography is picking up popularity very fast. Who doesn’t love to see the beautiful creations of nature?
As there are so many animals, you must decide which ones are the ones you are going to take pictures of. You should not go for an animal that can get fatal in the beginning, especially if there is no professional to help you out.
Taking photos of dogs, cats, or other animals will be a great thing to do. They are fun and adorable. Everybody loves to see a picture of a cute puppy, don’t they? So, you should try to take animal photographs at times as well.
Understanding 3 of the Basic Concepts (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO)
These 3 basic things are the elements of the exposure triangle. If you are just starting out, there is no better thing to understand than that.
Let’s discuss these terms in great detail down below.
It determines how much light will pass through the camera sensor. You can tell how important a role it plays in your photography.
You must get this concept down clear if you choose to shoot in different lighting settings. For instance, you might choose to take pictures in low light settings. For that, you’d need to set the aperture low. This will give you a radiant and bright picture, even at that lighting.
Also, a wide aperture is perfect for portrait photography. It gives a great bokeh and blurs the background well. Just because the wider aperture like, for instance, f/2.8, will let more light in.
Yet, a narrow aperture is great for landscape photo shooting. It helps to keep the field of view sharp and in focus.
This is very simple to understand. The greater the shutter speed is, the faster the movement speed you can capture. And the lower shutter speed is used for capturing more detailed pictures.
But you can’t just always set the shutter speed to the top. It’s not ideal for getting the most detail and sharpness in a picture. But for taking shots of a subject that’s super-fast, it’s the best setting.
On the other hand, lessening the shutter speed all the way isn’t the best idea either. It might create blurriness in the image. Although if you are aiming for more detail in a photo, you should try reducing the shutter speed. But make sure that the camera is stable in the first place.
It’s a hard concept to get down well. Photographers use ISO to brighten up the pictures most of the time. Other than that, it can give a certain touch to the images as well.
The basic cameras can increase the ISO pretty well. But the ideal ISO is always 100. You should not mess with that number if you don’t want to increase the brightness of the photo.
Increasing the ISO causes the image to get noisy. You don’t want that in most cases as it takes away from the photo you take. But if you are using a super high-end camera, you’ll be able to take it up to 6400 before it distorts.
Mix & Match
Now that you know the 3 functions and their uses, it’s time to mix and match to create the best adjustments. It is not an easy thing to do, especially at first. You’d have to try and change one of each every time at first until you get the right adjustment. But in the end, it’s worth the effort.
Structured Practice — The Key to Success
You know that practice makes progress. There is no better way to develop any skill than to practice.
But all types of practice are not the best. You must practice in the most effective way to get the best and fast results.
I prefer you to schedule your practice sessions. That is a great way for you to be consistent for a long time.
You see, the problem with most people is that they quit very soon. They don’t push themselves on a daily basis. But for you to get good at photography, you must practice daily.
Also, list out the shortcomings that you need to work on. And dedicate your practice hours to that. That is the best way to grow your skills at maximum speed.
Mental Practice — The Photography Mind Gym
Practice doesn’t just have to be physical; it can be mental as well. It is a bit different than taking your camera outside for shooting and practicing that way.
For mental practice, you need to improve the knowledge you have on your gear. Also, looking at other great photographer’s work will help to develop your “Eyes.” That way, you can capture the most interesting photos.
You can also read some textbooks on photography. It might have some handy techniques that you’ll be able to use in your next photo shooting sessions.
Taking an online course is another mental practice. It will teach you new techniques. Make sure you give some time to the photography mind gym daily.
Photography is an investment.
It breaks my heart that some people think that photography is a waste of time. They fail to understand that it can be an investment as well.
The demand for a professional photographer is through the roof these days. People are paying so much for a good photo. That makes it very easy for a photographer to get a job or to get paid to do his thing.
That makes it an investment for people to learn the art of photography. As they develop their skills, it can be a way of living for most people. They will finally be able to quit their 9 to 5 jobs and do what they are passionate about.
That is undoubtedly a dream come true for most of the people out there.
Post-processing is a good thing.
So many photographers out there consider post-processing as a bad thing. But it’s the opposite of that.
No matter how good your picture is, post-processing can make it even better. It would be foolish not to take advantage of that while you can.
There are so many different software for doing this job. They are fairly simple and easy to use, as well. But using those will help you get the best finishing touch to your pictures that you can’t get normally. So, make sure to use it on your photo shooting journey.
Good photographers create depth in their images.
Photography is not just about taking random photos of objects. A good photo contains so much more than that. It has a lot of emotion and story behind it. That’s what makes the spectator interested in a photo in the first place.
A photographer’s duty is to create that depth in his photos that appeal to the mass. And a good photographer can do that task very well.
You can learn to do that by focusing on the subject more. Try to shoot pictures of subjects that spark interest in you. Also, try to tell a story using your picture. That will create so much more depth to your picture.
You just went through tons of information on how to get into photography. The path to success is full of obstacles. But if you follow the proper methods shown, it’s gonna be a piece of cake for you.
But the main thing you’ll need is dedication, patience, and the right techniques as well. If you love your passion for photography, it will help you a lot in the process. You must not give up in the first couple of days.
And if you keep at it, you are going to be a great photographer in no time. I hope that our article helps you to reach your goals much faster and better.
